About the book:
What Once Was Mine: A Twisted Tale by Liz Braswell is an enchanting young adult fantasy novel inspired by Disney's animated film Tangled. As the twelfth installment in the popular Disney Twisted Tales series, the novel reimagines Rapunzel's familiar story through a fascinating question: What if Rapunzel's mother drank a potion made from the wrong flower?
In the kingdom of Corona, the queen falls seriously ill while pregnant. Desperate to save her and her unborn child, the kingdom's people search for the magical Sundrop flower, known for its extraordinary healing powers.
However, a terrible mistake changes everything. Instead of the Sundrop, they discover the mysterious Moondrop flower. Although its magic saves the queen's life, the child she gives birth to possesses an unusual and dangerous gift.
Unlike the Rapunzel of the original Disney story, whose golden hair contains healing magic, this Rapunzel has beautiful silver-gray hair with the power to cause harm rather than heal.
Fearing the consequences of her abilities, Rapunzel is confined to a secluded tower under the supervision of Mother Gothel. For eighteen years, she grows up believing that isolation is necessary to protect everyone around her.
Despite the dangers associated with her magical hair, Rapunzel dreams of exploring the outside world and witnessing the mysterious floating lanterns that appear every year on her birthday.
When she finally escapes the tower, she encounters two unexpected companions: Flynn Rider, a charming outlaw, and Gina, a young woman determined to make her own way in the world.
Together, they embark on a thrilling adventure across the kingdom, uncovering secrets about Rapunzel's origins, the mysterious Moondrop flower, and the true nature of her magical abilities.
As Rapunzel learns more about her past, she must confront difficult questions about identity, freedom, trust, and whether her extraordinary powers will determine her destiny.
Blending Disney magic, adventure, mystery, friendship, courage, and self-discovery, What Once Was Mine offers a darker and imaginative interpretation of the beloved Tangled story.
The novel is particularly suitable for readers who enjoy Disney retellings, young adult fantasy, magical adventures, strong female protagonists, and alternative versions of classic fairy tales.
